Director of District 4
Report to the Annual General Meeting
Canadian Coast Guard Auxiliary
Central & Arctic Region
February 20th, 2010
General:
The District 4 shoreline includes part of Lake Huron (Kincardine to Tobermory) and most of Georgian Bay. Thats a straight line coast distance of about 400 miles (650 Km). The actual total shoreline distance is beyond calculation. Shore crawls anywhere on the east shore of Georgian Bay is very time consuming.
We have 9 active SAR units
Units in this District responded to 25 incidents in 2009, 27 incidents in 2008. One less than 2007 and this represented a 20% increase from the year before that.
Gaps in our SAR coverage still exists. The most notables being on the East shore of the Bruce Peninsula, between Cape Crocker & Tobermory and the East shore of Georgian Bay, between Parry Sound and Britt. A replacement for the Sans Souci unit (see below) would maintain timely coverage in that area.
Two units retired in 2009. One at Sans Souci on Georgian Bay and the other at Lions Head. We are most grateful for their years of service -
thank you.
Training:
The District offered two (2) SAR training courses, one in Owen Sound and the other in Kincardine.
As well, one SAR Operations course was provided for the new unit in Owen Sound.
Members of the Mysis attended the MED A3 / SVOP course.
Three joint training exercises were held. Two with the Meaford cutter and the other with IRB 1000.
The Mysis conducted three in house on water training sessions.
The Cambrian also took advantage of in house on water training funds
The District will be conducting a SAR Training / District meeting in Collingwood on April 10/11 week-end. We hope to have most members current following this session
District Management includes:
Steve Lightfoot as Deputy Director
Duff Dwyer as District Training Officer.
Respectfully submitted,
Don Limoges
