Some equipment has a reference number/ID that can be tracked along with the piece of equipment when it is assigned to a person and/or asset. If this field is populated with a title for the reference then an additional field will appear when assigning the equipment asking for that reference. If this field is left blank - no reference will be tracked with the equipment.

Some Examples

A pager - assigned to a person - should have a phone number as a reference.

An Engine - assigned to a vessel - might have a power rating as a reference (175 Hp)
