The unit status indicates if a unit is active (ie displayed in lists etc) or inactive. Inactive units are generally either administrative units that are retained for statistical reasons or old units that no longer exist but for which historical data is retained in the system.

Once a unit has had data collected it should not be deleted as this would compromise historical data - it is for precisely this reason that the inactive status can be used to prevent it from being used for future reporting.
